    Call for Applications Summer 2007 Public Health/Harm Reduction Training Institute Krakow, Poland
 
    The Open Society Institute’s International Harm Reduction Development Program (IHRD) is soliciting applications from experienced harm reduction practitioners from Eastern Europe, former Soviet Union or Asia interested in attending an intensive six week public health and harm reduction summer institute at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland June 24-August 4, 2007.
 
    Description of the Public Health/ Harm Reduction Summer Institute
 
    The institute will be divided into two stages. In the first stage scholarship recipients will join 20 public health graduate students from across the EU for a four-week general public health course organized by the Institute of Public Health at Jagiellonian University. This course is part of the University’s Europubhealth program and is supported by Erasmus Mundus, an organization dedicated to promoting the EU as a center of educational excellence. This general course will be taught by experienced professors and researchers in international public health and is designed for people who plan to pursue a career in public health.   
 
    The second stage of the institute is a two week harm reduction training which is a part of an effort to build harm reduction leaders, strengthen harm reduction skills and motivate action through international cooperation. The curriculum combines concrete skills trainings and harm reduction theory. At the end of the two weeks, students will return to their home organizations with new skills, ideas, written materials, and an improved understanding of harm reduction theory, funding and practice worldwide. Those completing the institute will receive a certification credential in Harm Reduction.
 
    Important: All instruction and written materials will be provided in English only.
 
    During the two-week harm reduction intensive there will be ample time provided for networking and collaborating with fellow participants and the harm reduction practitioners leading the sessions.

    What the Scholarship will Cover
 
    The scholarship will cover the costs of travel to and from residence to Krakow, 6 weeks accommodation, 6 weeks meals, tuition, Institute materials, and visa for Poland (if applicable).
 
    Who Should Apply
 
    IHRD is soliciting applications from harm reduction practitioners in Central and Eastern European countries with:
    Significant on-the-ground experience in harm reduction, especially people who work directly with people who use drugs and/or sex workers; 
    Demonstrated interest in learning more about harm reduction and drug user health and wellness; 
    Membership and/or a leadership position in an organization, network, or group with the capacity to implement the skills learned at the harm reduction institute; 
    Proficient English speaking and reading comprehension skills.
 
    Priority will be given to applicants from nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) with on-the-ground experience.
 
    How to Apply
 
    Interested applicants should submit up to three page applications by email to ihrd@sorosny.org, no later than May 20th. All applications should be completed in English. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applicants will be notified whether or not they have been accepted by May 25th.

    2. Name and address of organization, network or group affiliations;
    3. A statement describing:
    a. Your harm reduction experience
    b. Why you want to attend the 2007 Summer Institute
    c. How you will use what you learn.
